I think Swedish massage gets a bad rap. It has the reputation of being a “foo-foo” massage and if you want real therapy you have to get or give deep tissue. It has been my experience in my business that I get the most “Wows, what kind of massage was that?” when I stick to a pure Swedish protocol. Now, I will admit there are times when I have to resort to other forms of bodywork if there is a specific issue that needs to be addressed, but I don’t think that every massage has to be therapy, therapy, therapy to be effective. A few years ago I read an article in one of the massage magazines that posed the question “Is Swedish Massage Dead?” I decided at that time to perfect my Swedish massage and keep it as pure as I can. And not only Swedish but the form of Shiatsu I learned and Manual Lymphatic Drainage. A lot of therapists pride themselves on the fact that they never follow a protocol. But most times I get the best reaction when I adhere to a pure form.
